What is a kid’s book club?

Paperback Portal’s book clubs encourage children to fall in love with reading! Book club members all read the same book and join weekly meetings to discuss what they’ve read. The magic is that these meetings are more like parties, action packed with fun extracted right from the book itself.

Motivated by their peers to complete the reading, club members will log into Zoom once a week for a full hour of fun. Each meeting will include a cooking/art project, a game about the reading, a discussion and lots of laughter. After completing a book, club members will earn a Paperback Portal original collectable vinyl decal to proudly display on their water bottle, laptop or tablet.

Paperback Portal hosts books clubs for readers of all ages, from 7 to teens. Contact us if you have questions about starting a club!

What happens at your book club meetings?

Each book has at least FOUR meeting dates. (Longer books may require more meetings.) The first meeting will pique your child’s interest and allow them to meet the rest of the club. From there, we will create a reading calendar with specific goals for each day. These daily goals will give your child a reading checklist, an easy and encouraging way to make daily progress in a book—leading right up to each meeting!

Book club meetings are packed with games, activities, discussion and laughter. Each meeting will be unique, with each session specifically designed for that week’s reading. Please see a sample schedule below:

Sample book club schedule:

Review: Group discusses favorite characters, major events and asks questions about the book.

Game: Book Charades! Paperback Portal will provide each child with a topic specific to their reading. Club members will take turns acting out their topics—no talking allowed!

Cooking/ Art:  In book A, hot cocoa is one of the main character’s favorite foods. Since it’s already warm outside, we will make hot chocolate for summertime! Supplies needed: 1 cup of milk, cocoa powder or Hershey’s syrup, marshmallows, cinnamon (stick or powder) and cookie of choice. (Supply list will be provided to families before each meeting.)

Prediction box: Kids will make guesses about what may happen next in the book. They will submit at least 3 guesses each to the Prediction Box. We will begin next session seeing who is correct!

Wrap Up: We will review reading for next week and answer any questions about the books so far.

Why should my child join a book club?

Reading, just for fun, has a lot of competition. Our children have social media to check, videos to create, interactive games to play with their friends and access to unlimited TV shows and movies with a click of a button. On top of electronics, our children’s days are scheduled with sports, lessons, family time and playdates. A book club is EXACTLY what they need to encourage reading for enjoyment!

Think about why adults join book clubs.  Maybe they like to read, but more often book clubs become places to meet with friends, to chat about life (and the book), and to laugh. Just like in adult book clubs, Paperback Portal kids will find the meeting a reward for reading.  Your child will be excited to make time in their busy schedule to READ, as the book becomes the portal to the fun activities with their peers. Over time, your little reader will find themselves enjoying the book itself, with the meeting as an added bonus. Whether encouraging new friendships or creating a new activity for old friends, a book club will provide a social outlet with the added benefit of fostering a love of reading. When we complete a book, groups can decide to read another book together, exchange contact information for lasting friendships or continue their reading journey independently. Our goal is to make sure they are happy and associate reading with having fun.
